University Grants Commission

The UGC has the unique distinction of being the only grant-giving agency in the country which has been vested with two responsibilities: that of providing funds and that of coordination, determination and maintenance of standards in institutions of higher education by promoting and coordinating university education. It determining and maintaining standards of teaching, examination and research in universities and framing regulations on minimum standards of education. UGC also monitoring developments in the field of collegiate and university education; disbursing grants to the universities and colleges. It is serving as a vital link between the Union and state governments and institutions of higher learning and also advising the Central and State governments on the measures necessary for improvement of university education.

National Assessment and Accretion Council (NAAC)

It is an autonomous body established by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India to assess and accredit institutions of higher education in the country. It is an outcome of the recommendations of the National Policy in Education (1986) which laid special emphasis on upholding the quality of higher education in India. To address the issues of quality, the National Policy on Education (1986) and the Plan of Action (POA-1992) advocated the establishment of an independent national accreditation body. Consequently, the NAAC was established in 1994 with its headquarters at Bangalore.
