OCWC Interface

OCW usually includes items such as lecture notes, reading lists, course assignments, syllabi, study materials, tests, samples and simulations. Much work in this regard has been done by the OpenCourseWare Consortium (www.ocwconsortium.org).There are currently over 2,500 open courses available from over 200  Universities. Users can find course materials by browsing individual university OpenCourseWare websites or by searching across all courses in the OCW Consortium’s website. Similarly, the Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Teaching Online (MERLOT) provides free and open resources designed primarily for faculty and students of higher education (www.merlot.org). MERLOT allows users to find peer reviewed online teaching and learning materials, and share advice and expertise.

The Consortium for Educational Communication (CEC) is an inter-university centre on electronic media, established by the University Grants Commission (UGC). CEC’s Learning Object Repository (LOR) houses educational resources in different subjects such as Archaeology, Biology, Botany, Chemistry, Commerce, Computer Science, Economics, Education, English and Fine Arts.

NPTEL provides E-learning through online Web and Video courses in Engineering, Science and humanities streams. The mission of NPTEL is to enhance the quality of engineering education in the country by providing free online courseware.

Saylor Foundation Interface.

Founded by a corporate CEO, the Saylor Foundation offers complete, freely accessible packages for college-level courses in business, science, math, engineering, the humanities, and the social sciences. Courses are designed to be easily used by students who are working entirely on their own, outside of any formal educational system.

It is a collection of high quality, free-to-use courses that can be download and use for teaching. All content is stored in Google docs making it easy to access, browse and download. Open Course Library offers downloadable files in Common Cartridge and ANGEL, which are compatible with other course management systems. 

Academic Earth Interface.

This independent non profit collects videos from the lecture-halls of universities around the country. Watch a semester’s worth of video lectures from a given university course, or find  accurate collection of lectures from the archive on a particular theme. No other course materials are offered. While the Web site lists 30 partner institutions, several only provide informational videos or links to their online degree programs. But overall, hundreds of instructors’ lectures are provided. .

Khan Academy Interface.

Khan Academy offers open educational resources primarily in mathematics and science but has expanded to include other subject areas. These 3,000 plus online videos are self paced and allow students to focus on the specific lessons they need help with.

Building on the success of MIT OpenCourseWare, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology joined the Massively Open Online Course (MOOC) movement with the announcement of MITx. This initiative will make courses available to students attending MIT, and is open to anyone interested in taking a course. These courses will include recorded lectures, course material, and assessments, which can be organized in a student portfolio. After completing a determined sequence of courses, a student will be awarded a certificate indicating completion.

Another well-known institutional source of HE OER is OpenLearn. The Open University is one of the world’s most successful distance education universities. Users can find hundreds of free study units across twelve topic areas, each with a discussion forum.

EKALVYA Interface

The other open educational resource project is the Ekalavya project launched by IIT, Bombay. In this project, the content is developed in various Indian languages and is distributed through the internet. These are part of the curriculum at IIT Bombay and are recorded to be disseminated in the Open Source for wider outreach. The courses offered are intended to cover a variety of subjects useful to the student community.

The Open University of Hong Kong (http://freecourseware.ouhk.edu.hk) , being the major local provider of distance education, offers free opportunities for interested students to have a genuine experience of distance education. Some of the courses are presented in Chinese.

Content Creation Initiatives
Besides OCW initiatives, there are other initiatives focused on creating learning resources that can be used to form courses or stimulate discussion and share advice around using OER.

Connexions Interface Access:

 Launched in 1999 by Rice University, offers users the ability not only to create content but to repurpose others’ content to include in a course. Currently it includes more than 17,000 learning objects in a range of disciplines. The benefit of Connexions is the ability of an instructor to pull from a range of learning objects and organize the material to create his or her own course. Connexions offer textbooks, journal articles, learning objects, and assignments. Once organized, the material can be viewed as either a PDF or EPUBS document for distribution to students. .

Similarly, WikiEducator and Curriki have made huge impact in the OER Movement. Launched in 2003 by the Commonwealth of Learning (COL), WikiEducator (http://wikieducator.org) is an evolving community focussed on collaboration.

It is involved in promoting the use of OER in Africa and supporting individuals and organizations in creating OER: OER Africa is also involved in numerous projects supporting the adoption of OER in a number of HEI across Africa. The site not only allows access to African developed resources, but also allows users to follow a documented process of how the materials were created. The website provides a space for various OER projects in Africa.
